【Singapore News】CRTG C885 Project Finalist Award in “TUCSS PROJECT OF THE YEAR 2022” and Shortlisted for ITA Award

China Railway Tunnel Group (CRTG) Singapore Circle Line 6 Contract C885 project has clinched TUCSS Project of the Year Finalist Award 2022. It was announced during TUCSS 2022 Annual Dinner Event on 4 October 2022.

TUCSS (Tunneling and Underground Construction Society Singapore) which is a member of International Tunneling Association (ITA), has grown from its humble beginnings in 1998 to a matured and strong society with over 1,000 members in Singapore.

TUCSS Project of the Year Award was launched in 2019. It is an initiative by TUCSS in order to enhance the professional standards of tunneling and underground construction works in Singapore, and act as a stimulus for the growing pool of tunneling and underground construction engineers in Singapore. This is to raise the bar in professional standards, knowledge, best practices and broaden the innovation mindset in order to work towards excellence in these works.

Meanwhile, Circle Line 6 Contract C885 is also shortlisted for the ITA Awards 2022, under category “Project of the Year Incl. Renovation (With a budget up to 50M€)”. It is the only Singapore Project that is shortlisted for ITA awards this year and this competition is currently ongoing.

Contract C885 has commenced from Oct 2017. It comprises of the construction of Prince Edward Road Station, cut & cover tunnels and bored tunnels which begin in stacked positions and connect to Cantonment station in parallel.

One EPB TBM was used and it was named Sun Wu. Sun Wu is named after the ancient Chinese military strategist Sun Tzu who wrote The Art of War. TBM Sun Wu has mined the tunnel alongside the Keppel Viaduct with many commercial and residential buildings along its alignment. The most challenging part is that, it had successfully undercrossed the Tanjong Pagar Railway Station, a century old national heritage building and monument twice.

TBM Sun Wu was first launched in Oct 2019 and completed Lower Bound Tunnel in Sep 2020 followed by Upper Bound Tunnel. It was launched for the second time in June 2021 and broke through into Cantonment Station in January 2022, which was 14.5 weeks ahead of the schedule. Its breakthrough also links up the full “circle” line in Singapore.
