Trailblazer went to Shamula Tunnel work site

In June 2016, with the explosion of explosives, the construction of the Xiaoxiangling Tunnel on the Emi Section of the Chengdu-Kunming Railway Double Line started officially, which was undertaken by CRTG. If the construction of the Xiaoxiangling Tunnel is to regards as "throat" of the Chengdu-Kunming Railway Double Line, then the Shamula Tunnel of the Chengdu-Kunming Railway is the creation of a "world wonder" which was built 50 years ago.  On the 20th, the reporter walked into the construction site of the Xiaoxiangling Tunnel in the Emi section of the Chengdu-Kunming Railway Double Line. Through the old photos of the project department's exhibition hall, the reporter reviewed the innumerable dangers and difficulties of the construction of the Shamula Tunnel on the Chengdu-Kunming Railway.

The Chengdu-Kunming Railway is an important railway line in the southwest and even in China. It runs from Chengdu City in Sichuan Province in the north to Kunming City in Yunnan Province in the south and the total length of the railway is 1096km. Construction started in July 1958, resume construction in 1964, and was completed and opened to traffic on July 1, 1970. It is a national   I level electrified railway.

Among the many railways in the world, China's Chengdu-Kunming Railway can be described as a transcendent position. It has built a miracle in the history of railway construction in China and the world. This is because the mountains along the Chengdu-Kunming Railway are steep and ravines criss-cross, and the terrain and geology are extremely complicated. It has been asserted by many experts as a "prohibited area for road construction".

The design, construction complex difficulty of Chengdu-Kunming Railway is unprecedented.  The construction of this railway was more than 4 times more difficult than the ordinary railway at the time. The successful construction of Chengdu-Kunming Railway not only broke the prediction of foreign experts, but also created a model for the construction of high-standard railway in the steep and complicated geographical environment. The Chengdu-Kunming Railway, together with the moon rocks brought back by Apollo of the United States and the first artificial earth satellite of the Soviet union, was called by the United Nations "the three wonders of man's conquest of nature in the 20th century". Shamulada Railway Tunnel is the most difficult section of Chengdu-Kunming Railway.

The real name of Shamalada Railway Tunnel is Shamulada Railway Tunnel. It is located in Xide county, Sichuan Province, China, between Hongfeng Station and Shamalada Station of Chengdu-Kunming Railway, the tunnel is 6383 meters in length. It is also the longest tunnel of Chengdu-Kunming Railway.

As the tunnel passes through the syncline, the strata are cretaceous purplish red sandy mudstone, siltstone and sand shale, and are filled with gypsum veins. Moreover, the surface is densely covered with trenches and valleys, the groundwater reserves are large, the stone is soft and easy to be weathered, and the fault structure and fissure are developed. At that time, the technology is backward, the modern mechanical equipment is extremely lacking, many are manpower, the construction task is very difficult, the construction of the tunnel is an impossible work.

At present, in addition to the multi-track electrification from Guangtongbei Station to Kunming Station Area, other sections of Chengdu-Kunming Railway are undergoing multi-track transformation, and all the transformation project will be completed in 2020. After the completion of the Chengdu-Kunming railway, it will take 5 hours to reach Panzhihua and 8 hours to reach Kunming. The total length of the double-track line is 900 kilometers, including 632 kilometers in Sichuan Province. The new railway line will mainly serve both passenger and freight transport, while the old Chengdu-Kunming line will mainly serve freight and short-distance passenger transport.
