At 10:00 a.m. on September 22, 2020, with the cutterhead of Tunnel Boring machine of C885 tunnel team arriving at the diaphragm wall of Cantonment MRT Station, the excavation of outer bound tunnel was successfully completed. The project manager of the client, Land Transport Authority (LTA) presented champagne to the project team as a token of gratitude, and the builders celebrated the victory in this extraordinary year in 2020 with cheers.

Despite the huge impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the project team has made great efforts to overcome the challenges and actively coordinate with authorities for recovery works, allowing site activities to be carried out as soonest as BCA permitted. Tunnelling was the first activity to resume construction on June 27, which was the first project in Singapore to resume tunnelling activity.

C885 project is the first main contract project of China Railway Tunnel Group in Singapore, and also the first bored tunnel of China Railway Tunnel Group in Singapore. The project team adheres to the spirit of "exploitation, professionalism, excellence and dedication" from overseas CRTG staff, continuously and safely delivers qualified products to the clients, evaluates various risks in advance and propose careful preparations.

During the operation of undercrossing through Singapore’s main historical Building, namely Tanjong Pagar Railway Station (TPRS), the project team is on duty 24 hours a day to strictly control the excavation parameters, to ensure that there is no damage to the building throughout the tunnelling process. Undoubtedly, the ground movement of TPRS is extremely small whereas tunnelling next to Custom Operations Command, zero settlement and zero damage were achieved. Besides that, outer bound tunnel also undercrossed Public Utilities Board (PUB) Murnane pipeline launching shaft with zero damage and settlement.

Since Singapore announced the lifting of the "circuit breaker" blocking measures on June 2, the pandemic situation has been effectively controlled, but many industries are still waiting for recovery work. Despite desperate condition, C885 project team did not stay put, but actively sought opportunities to resume work and production through step-up measures such as self-built dormitories. At present, all worksite in Singapore has resumed work in full swing.
